The 80's has been a major influence for many labels over the past few seasons, so it's no surprise that GUESS? Jeans, founded in 1981, would find inspiration from the decade of its inception. Instead of digging into the archives and going full-on '80's crazy, however, the GUESS? design team opted to tone it down a bit with a palette of dark indigo and grays.
80's-inspired silhouettes were updated with millennium-style treatments. For example, a bomber jacket made of lightweight denim, complete with moto details, was given a glossy treatment and as an added bonus, had removable sleeves. The motorcycle motif was repeated several times in womenswear. Skinny jeans were heavily brushed with reinforced knees and the requisite exposed stitching. Zippers were used somewhat liberally on pockets and mixed-media skinnies, with stretch paneling down the sides, were a definite throwback. A faded gray mini-skirt was embellished with quilt stitching on the back pockets and thigh which made it tough enough for Fall. The skirt had a matching motorcycle jacket (below) with the quilting detail on the back and shoulders.
Menswear was decidely more laidback with the gray palette more evident among the men's offerings. Dark slim fit jeans took a cue from womenswear with a front seam that began at the crotch and stopped at the knee. A gray-blue denim jacket was finished with a light wax coating (above) and was a tie for DenimHunt favorite along with the women's gray moto jacket.
Overall, there were several items that grabbed my attention, many of them I already mentioned. In my opinion, Fall 2010 was a great step up from last season with several items sure to become must-haves.
