Nudie Jeans has just announced the launch of a khaki collection for Fall 2011 called "Nudie Jeans Khakis". I was able to preview some of the collection at their Fall 2011 press preview (Nudie Jeans Fall 2011 Preview) and it was Ah-May-Zing. I love it when what I consider a progressive brand takes a boring staple and transforms it into something chic.
Along with the official announcement given via press release was a short anecdote. I normally don't share the entire contents of a press release but I thought this was an interesting story.
"All things being equal, khakis and jeans are two branches of the same tree. Back in the day when sailors began sewing their own “jeans” from sailcloth, khaki was the dominating shade. Over the years, these pants developed into what we know today as jeans.
Nudie Jeans Khakis originate from a small archipelago island on the west coast of Sweden. Some 200 years ago, this island was a lively place where weather-beaten fishermen sailed out in their black cutters for long periods on the North Atlantic. The extensive availability of herring during the 1700s–1800s helped this part of the country flourish. Exports increased, and comparisons were made with the gold rush in North America. The term “Swedish Klondike” was coined. Sailmakers and textile producers began establishing in the area to provide the fishermen with the equipment and clothes they needed. Their work provided the basis and inspiration for Nudie Jeans Khakis."
I think that's a pretty cool background story especially since we consider jeans to be such a part of American heritage.
Nudie Jeans Khakis will be available in four different fits that are based on their popular denim silhouettes. Look for them in stores next month.
