Last night, I took a gander at GUESS's Spring/Summer 2012 preview at the Dream Downtown. The fully merchandised show included bags, jewelry and eyewear, telling the complete lifestyle story of the GUESS girl. Holding the event in the luxe penthouse club of one of New York's hippest hotels helped convey a citified, sometimes flashy, look for young women and juniors.
Broken-in denim creates laid-back appeal especially in faded, almost-white colors. Denim shirts (tied at the navel), coveralls, short shorts and vests merge the ongoing prairie girl trend with city attitude… the vintage countrygirl has gained some urban street smarts it seems. Short-long combinations feature cropped jean jackets over long tops or long floral dresses.
Aside from the faded denims, most other items looked modern and sometimes graphic. Colors were contrasting… black and white; shots of red; deep cobalt with teal and black. A-line skirts and belted dresses will be go-to items for the quintessential GUESS girl. And the one-shoulder pant suit stands out with its long, clean silhouette. For jewelry and accessories, it seems that layered adornment is key: gold bib necklaces, large silver pendants, multiple bracelets and oversized leather belts.
