We are living in an age where we are limited only by our imagination and that is most evident in the area of design which encompasses architecture, interiors and technology. There is something about design that I find so fascinating and I am constantly amazed by the steady stream of innovation from these areas. The fashion industry, though design-oriented by nature, is most forward-thinking and progressive in the area of wearable tech, often looking for ways to merge the two. So it was only a matter of time before the latest buzzthing in the area of design, 3D printing, found it's way into fashion.
A company called Lix has created a 3D pen that allows you to "draw in the air", almost in a literal sense. Basically it's a printing pen that allows the creation of more detailed, original items that are tailored to the user's specific purpose. During the demo, items created with the pen ranged from the functional like wastebaskets, to the artistic such as 3D sculptures. However, what caught my eye, literally blew my mind, was when it was used to create the embellisment on a t-shirt (see below). The video shows the pieces being 'drawn' individually and then added to the cut-out portion of the shirt. BRILLIANT! Absolutely brilliant!
I am so inspired by the idea, that if I could purchase one now (at a reasonable price) I would in a second. Visions of tearing holes in my jeans and filling them with plastic doodles are dancing through my head at this very moment. But alas, the project is being promoted and sold on Kickstarter and unfortunately the one in my price range ($70) is all sold out. So I have to wait. But I will be keeping my eye on when it becomes available.
What kind of creations would you make with a 3D printing pen?
