Governor’s Island was the location of the second annual 90’s Fest this year. The event was hosted by ageless 90’s icon Pauly Shore who, other than a shorter haircut, still retains that offbeat, loopy charm that made him such a favorite among the last great crop of MTV VJs.
Musical acts included Bone Thugs -n- Harmony, Sister Hazel and C+C Music Factory who played some of their most popular hits. The inimitable DJ Jazzy Jeff, of dynamic rap duo DJ Jazzy Jeff and the Fresh Prince, brought the house down with a mix of some of our favorite 90’s jams. Ironically he wore a shirt that said “Summer Summer Summer Time” and yes, he played that too.
The best part of the festival was seeing how millennials interpret 90’s fashion. Flannel shirts tied around the waist were the dominant trend among women, followed closely by jumpers with one side of the bib unhooked. Hair was thrown up into two messy buns a’la Donna Martin. Standout styles were DIY jeans with gigantic holes in the knees and thighs as well as graffitied jeans reminiscent of the earliest fashions of the decade.
Throwback graphic tees with 90’s musical groups, television shows or cartoons were a favorite among guys. Guys also took the opportunity to throw together the most mixed-matched prints they could find for the loudest looks.
Both guys and gals adorned themselves with fanny packs, with girls also preferring small shoulder bags. Neon sunglasses were a festival staple along with the most important accessory from the 90s, or ever, the scrunchie. Surprisingly, it didn’t make it into many hairstyles with most preferring to wear them stacked on the wrist.
