In the ’90s colorful jeans ruled. That is not an exaggeration. Remember Cross Color and the reds, oranges, and greens they used to produce on jeans and tops? If you don’t, then jump on over to this Kris Kross video for a refresher.
Color was such a big deal back then that it was huge when Levi’s dropped a new colorway on a line of jeans. I had a pair of 550s in gold, sky blue, green, and even tried to dye a pair purple (they came out magenta) until Levi’s came out with their own version. Guess was also a major color player, churning out their popular carpenter jean in various hues. I owned a pair of those too. In red.
A lot of my friends would go out and buy Rit dye just to update an old pair with a color that no one had. Wanted something with a little more flavor? Graffiti artists had their airbrushes on standby ready to paint whatever you wanted on whichever leg you wanted. No graffiti artist available, well a plain old sharpie would do. And yes, I did that too, recently.
Fast forward two decades and all of the elements I described are back with a vengeance. Benetton, itself a ’90s throwback, sent a Rainbow Brite assortment of color down the runway in the boldest hues possible. Moschino delighted us with a camp graffiti print on a Farrah-haired model given me all kinds of inspiration.
For day to day looks, Hellesy and Eckhaus Latta, produced more wearable styles that could easily be incorporated into your existing wardrobe. On the flip side, Brazilian brand John John went with more eccentric watercolor effects for those that like to be a bit more daring.
Nostalgia aside, the main reason I like color is very simple. It makes people happy. I could research color theory, or pull out a study, but I don’t think it takes a genius to know that color has a significant impact on our moods. The brighter the color, the brighter the mood. Maybe that’s why there was so much of it at the fall shows. I mean, we all could use a little more happiness nowadays don’t you think?
