Five Questions for Five Pockets: Chip & Pepper

Following the launch of their celebrated, C7P line at JCPenny, Chip & Pepper are quickly climbing up the denim ranks since founding their first fashion line in 1987. Along with the C7P line, keep a look out for the Stella jean (shown below) this fall. The best seller has a contour waistband and asymmetrical rise--lower in the front, higher in the back--to provide just the right amount of coverage while providing a must-have wider leg fit. Chip and Pepper took a time-out from creating the perfect fit, to answer Five Questions for Five Pockets.

1. What was your first pair of jeans?
CHIP--We always wore Levi's growing up, but when I was about 12 or 13 there was a brand of designer jeans called Great Scott that I was dying to have. My mom thought I was crazy because they were like $40 so I saved up my money to buy them. Everyone made fun of me and said I was wearing girl's jeans because they had no back pockets! But they looked so cool--I didn't care. I was ahead of the trends!

2. Who do you think is the ultimate denim icon?
PEPPER--Definitely our friend from childhood, Randy Tuck. He always had the best denim and he always looked like a movie star. He was always perfectly dressed. No one can wear denim like Randy Tuck. He would get in fights almost everyday--and always lost--but no matter how beat-up he got, somehow his jeans managed to stay perfect. We actually named a pair of jeans after him, the Tuck. They have deconstructed pockets but are still great looking as if they made it through the war but still look hip and stylish--just like Randy Tuck!

3. What are your current favorite jeans?
PEPPER--The carrot cut! It's so great for men. It has a sack bum, then gets skinny and progressively tappers. It looks like a carrot! Our carrot cut jean is called "Sack Ass."

4. What denim trend do you wish would go away?
CHIP--I don't know if it is a trend or if I should call it an epidemic, but I can't stand when people, mostly guys, wear jeans that are several sizes too big for them! You know the style--the crotch is so low, the fly is at their knees. Boxers or briefs is a personal choice, I don't need to see it!

5. What's your number one rule for denim?
CHIP--The number one rule is--there are no rules--just wear something that feels good. When you feel good, you look sexy. Being comfortable comes across as pure confidence. It is sexy! For a man or a woman, the best advice I can give is to wear something that fits you well and feels great.

Filthy Friday: caring for your denim

It's Friday and we're sleepy, however, with all the mumbo jumbo out there about not washing jeans vs. hand washing vs. dry cleaning, we found some helpful hints from our friends at Evisu and Nudie.

What do you think? Japan or Sweden?

EVISU

Many people choose not to wash their denim fearing it will damage the fabric even when they are quite dirty. Mr. Matsukara, a shop manager in Japan, advises you to "buy few pairs of Evisu jeans and wash sometimes".

Fall '07 preview: Old Navy

Old Navy shipped us a preview of their Fall 2007 collection and it's nothing less than stellar. With trends following all the premium brands but at much more affordable prices, Old Navy has come a long way since polar fleece and Carrie Donovan.

Three new fits are being introduced to flatter every figure. The Diva  is low-rise and body hugging while the Flirt is more classic with a medium rise. For the trendy set, the Sweetheart has a higher rise and easy leg. At $29.50, you can try all three!

Our personal fav. is the trouser denim at $34.50 which can go to work with a blazer as easily as it goes to a show at Mercury Lounge with a wife beater and eyeliner. (Ok, so we wear wifebeaters and eyeliner to work as well, but you get our point.)

Their colored denim range is primary friendly with cobalt blue, yellow, and crimson red. For those less bold, pastel purple and gunmetal grey  also come in the slim silhouette. At $34.50, this is a trend easy to adopt.

He leaves the company looking to develop foreign markets such as Japan and Europe with expansion into the footwear, children's clothing, eyeglasses, and outerwear markets.

Glenn Palmer, a turnaround specialist, has stepped in to help the company reevaluate Blue Holdings Group amid what they say is a "softening denim market." Specifically, Palmer's looking to reevaluate their distribution plans This is the third change in senior management at Blue Holdings Group in seven months.

We'll see in the coming months what this means for their umbrella of premium jeans. Keep your eyes on the shelves!
