Levi's strikes again

Following the announcement of their lawsuit against Polo on Monday, Levi's strikes again; this time against Abercrombie & Fitch.

Again sighting pocket stitching infringement, Levi's finds the arches on A&F's Ruehl brand jeans a bit too similar for comfort. Both sides are remaining pretty quiet, but Levi's is seeking an unspecified amount of cash for damages and loss of profits.

Who do you think Levi's is hitting next?

Andre Leon Talley: Resort '08

In our book, Andre Leon Talley can do no wrong. You heard it--NO wrong. He proves us right once again with his denim-loving editorial in the August issue of Vogue. With Resort becoming the third season, it's hard to believe designers are able to pack in another collection and buyers able to purchase another shipment between the frenzied Spring and Fall collections calendar. However, as Andre highlights, designers such as Donna Karen, Marc Jacobs, and Zac Posen have made this once VERY exclusive season approachable by incorporating the most versatile fabric, denim.

Earnest I Am to launch at Project

With the success of yesterday's Five Questions for Five Pockets with Scott Morrison of Earnest Sewn, we thought you might enjoy the latest tidbit from DNR. Launching this week at Project in New York, Earnest Sewn will present a slightly less-expensive collection, Earnest I Am, of four men's and four women's fits.

Traditionally Earnest Sewn retails from $170-$285, while Earnest I Am will hover in the range ove $124-$148. Scott told DNR, "This new line is less for a jeans snob who wants a whole denim back story, and more for the younger guy who wants something simple, sexy and of good quality--something along the lines of A.P.C or the old Helmut Lang." He also notes, "This is about being inclusive, rahter than exclusive."

All five washes will be kept simple with men's styles including a straight let, boot cut, relaxed fit, and a novelty style. Look for a white leather back patch to distinguish the styles. While the price is a bit lower, the quality is not as Earnest Sewn is sourcing from the same Japanes, Italian, and Turkish mills used in their traditional line.

Levi's vs. Polo

Levi Strauss & Co. allege Polo Ralph Lauren is stealing their stitches. We have not seen the pockets in question and neither has the RL team of attorneys as told to WWD in Monday's edition. While we love both teams, it brings up a bigger issue--how similar is too similar?

With Polo being such a large signature brand of its own, we doubt they would intentionally copy a competitor rather than using their own John Henry. However, Levi's, being synonymous with American denim, has become a category in addition to a brand name. Think Kleenex and Band-Aid.

Numerous mass retailers have emulated the signature stitches of premium denim bigwigs such as Seven and True Religion. But when does your signature lose it signature? Is Levi's vs. Polo the Metallica vs. Napster? (yes, we're still on our 90s kick) Just as many record labels looked to Lars Ulrich and James Hetfield to lead the way, do you think numerous other brands will follow "suit" with Levi's?

Five Questions for Five Pockets: Scott Morrison, Earnest Sewn

Denim industry heavy-hitter, Earnest Sewn, has quickly risen to be one of the industry's most celebrated and respected brands. With fans such as Courtney Cox-Arquette, Shooter Jennings, and Lenny Kravitz, Earnest Sewn works as well for the woman on the go as it does for world-renowned musicians. President and designer, Scott Morrison, took a moment to share with us some of his denim insight.

1. What was your first pair of jeans?
My first pair that I can remember buying were Levi's of course, but the first pair that actually made me think differently about denim were a pair of Replay 914's.  They were in a limited edition Japanese denim, they felt different than anything I’d ever worn.

2. Who do you think is the ultimate denim icon?
I can't think of any one person, but there are a few that have made some amazing strides: Adriano Goldshmeid, Renzo Rosso, and of course Loeb ‘Levi’ Strauss all come to mind.

3. What are your current favorite jeans?
Without a doubt the Earnest Sewn 'Hutch.89' fit is my all time favorite jean.  It's in one of my favorite greencaste Japanese denims, and the fit is exactly what a durable bootcut should fit like.  It's one of those jeans' that is truly timeless and only gets better the more you wear it.

4. What denim trend do you wish would go away?
Thankfully we avoid being too much of a ‘trend’ driven brand since we’re commited to the classic 5 pocket aesthetic.  Our passion is authenticity and integrity, so the trends in denim I find most offensive is contrived washes, cheesy embellishments, and just about anyone who doesn’t know a thing about making blue jeans giving it a shot because it’s ‘hot’ right now.

5. What’s your number one rule for denim?
If you can avoid it, limit the number of denim washings.  Personally, I'm a "never ever wash your jeans" type of guy.  I believe in letting your denim wear in and age as it will.  The great thing about denim is the more you wear them in the better they get.  If things get really unsanitary, I either spray them with Fabreeze or hand wash them and line dry them by hanging them from Earnest Sewn's signature locker loop on the center back waistband.

Prada: Because we can

Admittedly, what you are about to read has absolutely no relation to denim other than Prada does have amazing denim.

As the work day is coming to an end, we popped over to visit Scott Schuman's site, TheSatorialist, and realized we can no longer pass on posting an image from Prada's S/S08 collection.

The combination of patterns is too genius to wait for another blog to recognize. Besides, isn't mixing of pattern the perfect inspiration when topping a great pair of jeans?

ck IN2U film contest

Mena Suvari, Jennifer Coolidge, Emilio Estavez, and Evan Ferrante lend their film expertise to a new venture. Calvin Klein's latest fragrance, ck IN2U hosted a film competition encouraging site visitors to express what makes them laugh, cry, and everything inbetween. whatareyouin2.com announced today that Kyle Connolly of Ontario, Canada won the $10,000 prize with his boy meets girl film, 2@2.

Check out what Mena, Jennifer, Emilio, and Evan, and all the online voters think is the best film out there, 2@2.

We love Calvin's ability to reach out to the youth of today no matter the year. In fact, we still have a soft spot for the controversial ads in the days of our grunge-filled youth when Kate Moss was heroin chic rather than cocaine chic.

Is Calvin Klein living David Wooderson's moto in the '93 hit, Dazed & Confused?

"I get older, but they stay the same age."  We think yes.
