Style.com, Jean Splicing

Style.com has a great presentation on denim called "Jean Splicing". Part of their trends + shopping section, it uses pictures and few words to illustrate denim's role as a functional, versatile and classic fabric.  Photos range from a wax denim jacket by Balenciaga to a denim trench dress by Bulga.  What makes the presentation even more special is it's equal representation of items such as denim handbags, shoes and home furnishings.

Ron Arad for Notify

Denim and Art go together like, well, think of some of the best and unique matches you can think of and it fits. Anytime, the two mix it's always interesting and noteworthy. Think last year's Warhol Factory X Levi's X Damien Hirst presentation in New York City and currently showing, Selfridge's Cult of Denim exhibit in London. Now all of us art and denim enthusiasts can look forward to Notify Jean's sponsorship of contemporary artist Ron Arad at the Pompidou Center in Paris.  Arad will be showing his first solo exhibition at the center starting November 19th which is sure to garner great reviews.  In honor of the exhibition, Arad and Notify creative director Maurice Ohayon will be collaborating on the "Ron Arad for Notify" bag which according to Fashion Week Daily "will include futuristic features like a button that, once pressed, will change a panel on the bag from opaque to transparent, to reveal the bag's contents". Expect this collaboration to continue into Spring 2009 as the two work on creating a Notify showroom in Milan that will offer custom denim and be an artist's haven as it will offer creative space and a gallery.

Ed Hardy's Christian Audigier To Sell

It comes as a bit of a shock to hear that Christian Audigier, the brains behind the success of Ed Hardy as well as his own Christian Audigier luxury streetwear line, is looking to sell his empire.  According to Vogue UK 15 interested parties are willing to spend upwards of $700 million to buy the company.  The company consists of 10 brands and 92 licensees ranging from apparel and footwear to beverages and is expected to make approximately $300 million this year.  No word yet on why Audigier wants to sell.

Diddy Buys Enyce

Sean "P. Diddy" Combs is to companies what Sean "P. Diddy" Combs is to names; in constant acquisition.  The hip-hop mogul, whose hardly known for music anymore, has just added another brand to his portfolio of apparel companies which include Sean John and Zac Posen.  Just recently announced is the purchase of urban label Enyce from Liz Claiborne for $20 million. Liz Claiborne originally bought the brand in 2003 for a whopping $114 million. Another shining example of our ailing economy.  Although Enyce has been around for over a decade we haven't heard much from the brand. It's going to be interesting to see in what direction Combs decides to take it.

Heads Up India! Diesel's Coming

Diesel Black Gold/Spring 2009

We hate to show favoritism, but we can't help that Diesel has been making a lot of news lately. The brand has recently announced that it will be entering into a joint venture with Indian company Reliance Brands to open up several stores in India by Summer 2009.  Diesel will have the majority stake in the partnership at 51%.  Expect to see stores opening first in Mumbai and Delhi then expanding to Bangalore, Chandigarh and Hyderabad.

Selfridge's Cult of Denim

From now until November 15th contemporary British artist Stuart Semple, in collaboration with high-end department store Selfridges, has curated an exhibition titled "Selfridges Cult of Denim".  The exhibition is showing at the same time as the Frieze Art Fair and is meant to celebrate the "versatility of denim in fashion and art". Some of the most well-known denim brands including Diesel, Levis, J Brand, Evisu and 7 for All Mankind have agreed to participate in this project by offering up their jeans as blank canvases for Semple and other pop artist to create works of art.  To top it all of, this limited edition denim along with graphic tees will be for sell.  Be sure to visit this exciting new exhibit.

Farewell Mr. Blackwell

By now everyone's heard and mourned the passing of fashion critic Mr. Blackwell, who died Sunday at the age of 86 of an intestinal infection. Known for almost 50 years for his snarky, sarcastic and hugely entertaining 'Worst Dressed List', he was a mainstay of fashion and popular culture. Mr. Blackwell is sure to be missed by his readers as well as the celebs he so playfully skewered.

Brand to Watch: DL1961

New to the scene and making quite the name for itself is denim brand DL1961.  What makes DL1961 stand out from the plethora of denim brands popping up every day is that it's the largest and most extensive brand to use a revolutionary four-way stretch fabric that moves 360 degrees. This is available in both the men's and women's lines offering the "ultimate combination of fit and style".  Having just launched for Holiday '08, they have developed an impressive celeb following with Miley Cyrus, Brooke Shields and Debbie Mazar all owning a pair. Below is Gossip Girl Blake Lively looking super-stylish in the 'Melissa' Jean.
