Denim on the Runway: Milan Menswear: D&G;

D&G's Spring/Summer 2010 show can be summed up in one word... "Wow!" Or another word, "Va-va-va-voom!" Or better yet, it just left us speechless. The eye candy models almost made it hard for us to pay attention to the clothing...almost. Lucky for us, Domenico Dolce and Stefano Gabbana's sun-baked cowboy take on denim was hard to ignore and surprisingly unexpected. 

Body-flattering, rugged and scorched denim, with every possible abuse imaginable, graced the oh-so-toned physiques of the male models moseying down the runway. Denim on denim made an appearance, as well as the expected rips and unexpected studs (a little bit of womenswear creeping into the men's department). Even more unexpected was the reintroduction of khaki denim, also abraded and beaten, as well as the two-toned indigo jeans dyed to resemble paneling. To surprise us even more, the rugged denim was sometimes paired with slick blazers.

The Spring/Summer 2010 European menswear shows are rounding up this week, but let's rewind back to when they kicked off in Milan. Alexander McQueen opted for a presentation that consisted of a three-screen short film made with photographer David Sims. Although denim is not a staple for McQueen, there were a few looks that took obvious inspiration from the fabric.

Rock & Republic Plain Wrap

Sometimes keeping things simple is just so damn cool. Case in point, Rock & Republic's new Plain Wrap collection. Looking at the collection is like literally looking at the no-frills section of the supermarket with each item prominently displaying the name of the item, down to a pair of stilettos that say 'STILETTO'. 

“This is a new initiative with a new perspective for the consumer that wants fashionable basics with staying power,” said Michael Ball, Rock & Republic's founder and creative director. 

The line includes, jeans, hoodies, tees, tanks and more. Of course Plain Wrap is a limited edition as it is an offshoot of their Rock & Republic Recession Collection also in limited edition. The price points are lower than Rock & Republic's normal fare and is expected to launch this August.

Aéropostale Begins Opening "P.S. from Aéropostale" Store for Tweens

Aéropostale's new tween brand P.S. from Aéropostale just opened its first store in the Palisades Mall in West Nyack, New York. It's the beginning of nine-store rollout introducing the brand to the NY Metropolitan area.

The P.S. brand is aimed at girls and boys aged 7-12 years old and includes graphic tees, jeans and dresses. The waistband of the jeans were brought up an inch than those offered at the Aéropostale stores to make them more acceptable to mothers. 

If the P.S. brand proves successful, expect to see a 500 store expansion in the future. 

Denim Trends @ Camden Crawl

We always expect to see people wearing denim progressively at art/music scenes more so than the mainstream fashion industry. Check out some of the more interesting trends coming out of the Camden Crawl London festival.

• Today's hipsters are on a mission to reclaim the pleated nightmares known as the 'Mom jean'. Might as well add the oversized shirt to match. Pairing indigo on indigo, it's a combination that has to be seen to believe, but actually works when paired with leggings or jeggings. Men kept it simpler with a slimmer silhouette.

• Speaking of jeggings, the jean leggings were a popular item and prove that it is possible for the skinny jean to get skinnier. A variety of colors, washes and finishes keep it from getting boring. 

• Love, love, love cute denim dresses. Super-faded acid washed on a pinafore-style or a utilitarian look with a prominent zipper is cute and edgy

• Remember the seasonless shorts. Add a sporty 70's cut, dark acid-wash and trashy nylons and it's pop/punk fun.

Current/Elliott Launches Deadstock

 

Popular denim designers, Emily Current and Meritt Elliott, are launching a new collection for Fall under their Current/Elliott brand named the earcatching Deadstock. Deadstock takes inspiration from the vintage deadstock jeans of the 50's, 60's and 70's. While their Current/Elliott brand is known for it's signature worn and distressed looks, the Deadstock line will feature relatively sharper silhouettes in less destructed looks. "[Real] Deadstock is a little stiff and sometimes not as flattering on the body," said Elliott. "We cheated a bit."

The collection features both a women's and men's line made from Japanese denim and comes in three washes, One Wash (dark), Classic (indigo) and True Blue (faded). Deadstock will be available at over 80 high-end retailers come July.
