Denim on the Runway: NY Fashion Week S/S 2010: G-Star Raw
The G-Star Raw runway show, held at the Hammerstein Ballroom, is always a treat with the combination of hipster celebs, super-cool fashionistas and a theatrical presentation.
At the beginning of the show the models, exiting from one of five lit columns that extended from floor to ceiling, stalked down the runway in stark white garments. The white than morphed into blue and white custom prints, to washed and abraded denim, then finally into the dark raw form that is synonymous with the brand. As expected, there were many standout pieces such as the paper pattern of raw denim used in a dress and men's coat that was reminiscent of medievel armor. There was also the shiny, coated denim seen in a men's suit, as well as woman's pants and dress. Also of note were details such as the detachable tuxedo tails and the military style accoutrements on jackets and pants giving new meaning to the word button-fly
The collection was inspired by vintage Mediterranean high-society couture and once again G-Star proved how seamlessly classic, formal dressing is integrated into their signature utilitarian aesthetic.
