With several different
lines, targeted at several different markets, I can’t imagine a busier group
than the GUESS Design team. A few weeks back I got to look at the brand's main
line and was excited at what they were offering for Fall. This time I was able
to preview GUESS by Marciano, a line with a celebrity following that caters
towards a mature, stylish demographic, with slightly more sophisticated tastes.
GUESS by Marciano is not a denim-focused collection, but there are pieces scattered throughout, ensuring the line doesn't stray too far from its roots. Almost as if to make up for the minimal amount, the design team made sure that the denim offerings stood out among the tony dresses, supple leathers, Argentinian-inspired knits and chunky sweaters.
One of the first pieces I
noticed was a cropped, gray denim jacket with pleats sewn flat on the shoulders
and a criss-cross detail going down the spine. This is the second cropped, gray
denim jacket that I beelined towards in one of GUESS’ collections. I’m starting
to think I have a thing for them. This wasn’t the only jacket that I found
exciting, however. Another was a distressed denim jacket with leather sleeves
and collar, which was cropped in the front, but lower in the back. Intentional
or not, this jacket represents the two-toned trend, emerging in jeans,
moving into other areas. I suspect when this item hits retail we can expect
lots of knockoffs in faux leather and other undesirable materials, therefore I
suggest hopping on it fast and getting the real thing. Speaking of two-toned,
it’s here yall! I saw it enough times during market week to recognize that this
is going to be a viable trend. GUESS by Marciano had two great versions in
their collection; an inky indigo legging with a leather front and side zippers
making for a snug fit and a five-pocket version with a black twill front. For
the most part, don’t expect a skinny here, a bootcut there. Every piece was
stylized and unique, from the trouser with the back seams starting at the derriere, to the carrot leg crop.
As an aside, if you’re
anything like me, than you drool over accessories and the spread in the GUESS?
showroom was akin to an all you can eat buffet. Oversized handbags, platform
stilettos and thigh-high boots are sure to be popular at retail. In addition
was a display of chunky and layered jewelry that looks as if it took
inspiration from antique, estate jewelry. I love estate jewelry and will be
sure to look for the cocktail rings when they hit stores. Last but not least,
GUESS by Marciano will have a soft launch of sunglasses this Summer. There are only seven styles
available, but I suspect this area will be expanding.
