Theory Holiday & Resort 2010 Preview

  IMG_0119

When I was invited to visit the Theory showroom in the Meatpacking District to view their Holiday and Resort collection, I didn't know what to expect. I own pieces from Theory, a suit, which I love, and a few shirts, but I couldn't quite remember if I'd ever seen them stock denim. So I stopped into their Soho store a few days before to do some research better known as shopping. Nope, no denim, but an awesome campaign where a guest stylist created a few looks, which were then placed on their own racks, complete with a photo of said stylist in the look. But I digress. The lack of denim in the store doesn't mean much. Some brands where denim is not a core item, will rotate novelty styles in and out of their collection.

On the day of the preview I made my way to their offices which happen to sit above their massive flagship store by the Gansevoort Hotel. I didn't expect to see any denim but Theory is well know for its minimalist contemporary clothing and I thought I would be able to find a few interesting items without straying too far from my main purpose. After all, wearing head to toe denim may be trending but it's an item primarily meant to be worn with other articles in your wardrobe. After browsing through the racks and admiring some very cool pieces, such as several pairs of lightweight, loose fitting pants and a belted, black, knitted skirt with a type of cargo pocket, I found what I was looking for.

In the middle of the third rack were a pair of indigo-dyed jeans. I use the term "jeans" loosely as what I was really looking at were a pair of 5-pockets that were not denim, but actually a stretch knit that, turned inside out, looked like fleece. The popularity of denim leggings or jeggings, which are sometimes more stretch than denim, however, have given many companies license to use the term more freely. The jeans came in indigo and mint, with the mint version also available in a knee length short. There was also a soft gray version with zippered front pockets. In addition to jeans, I also found a black, quilted short skirt that had been washed down and faded. This skirt was definitely my favorite of the day. Lightweight knit tops were the perfect companion pieces as well as fleece blazers and blouses.
