The Guess? Holiday 2010 collection included a pleasant and unexpected surprise this season. In March of
this year, Guess, along with the Fashion Institute of Design and Merchandising [FIDM], held a design challenge in conjunction with the Annual FIDM Debut Fashion Show. Ten of the brightest students presented a runway collection with at least one item within the presentation being a denim-focused look created with washes previously chosen by the Guess design team. The winner of the competition was Brittany Vu who, as a result, was able to oversee the production of the winning design while working as a design assistant for the company.
While walking through the showroom I honed in on one particular look ---a cropped, lightweight, coated jacket layered over a heavier ounce, gray denim vest paired with dark jeans (above). It stood out to me because of the fabrics used and the way in which it was styled. As I gushed over it, I was told that it was the winning design submitted by Brittany. I nodded my head in silent accord with the judges and thought to myself that this girl was going places.
Brittany's design will be included with other great offerings from this season. I was enamored with the sky blue, pleated jeans that were cropped at the ankle and thought the allover crystal studding on dark indigo skinnies was wearable and not over the top. A farmer-style jumper was included and is a trend that will probably not reach the level of popularity it held in the '90's, but definitely offers alternative options for women's wardrobes. Last, but not least, fashionistas will have fun showing off a jean with functional zippers on both seams that literally are able to split the pants in half.
Almost equal to the amount of jeans offered in womenswear were denim shirts, shorts and skirts. Shorts and skirts were cut high and will display a lot of leg. Take note people. For the first time, possible ever, shorts will still be in stores through Winter and you won't have to pack them away when your changing over your seasonal wardrobe.
Gray, relatively clean, washes are still continuing for men as this trend in men's denim has not yet reached it's peak. However, heavily-abraded and worn effects are no longer taking a backseat to the clean, indigo washes that were a must-have for several seasons. Slim-fit silhouettes made up most of the collection and are on par with the slim, not-quite-skinny, trend in menswear. Also included was the requisite raw denim, that is becoming a must-show in almost every brand's men's collection. Rounding out menswear was a selection of denim, chambray and plaid shirts that will have men wearing head to toe Guess?.
