It was my first visit to the New York City showroom of Vancouver-based Dish Jeans and with all of the other Spring previews going on, I had no time to do any prior research on the brand and therefore didn't know what to expect. As with most brands that I've had little to no knowledge of before meeting with them, I assume, sometimes wrongly, that they are brand new. This was one of those "sometimes".
Dish Jeans actually dates back to 2001 when Pimlico, the Canadian licensee of brands like Wrangler, Lee and Gap, decided to purchase Dish, a surf apparel brand based on the West Coast. Keeping the name, the company rebranded as a denim line for women 18-35. Eventually the success of Dish lead to the creation of Desi, an offshoot denim line catering to trendy women over 35 which makes me wonder why no one's thought of this before. I mean, cool doesn't stop at 34 right?
At first look, both brands are made up of classic styles and washes, however Dish has a decidely more youthful look with shorts, jumpers, skirts and dresses mixed in among the five pockets. The majority of items were made with a dark indigo wash but there were a few variations seen in gray skinny jeans and abraded washes in jeans and shorts.
Besides a few style differences, Desi Jeans are distinguishable by a curvier silhouette meant to accomodate the changing figure of more mature women. With that said, the styles are still modern with bootcuts, skinnnies and trousers. Also included are capris and super hip shorts that cut off mid-thigh ---perfect for transitioning into Fall.
