Denim on the Runway: Fall/Winter 2011-2012: G-Star RAW
G-Star RAW brought their show to Lincoln Center this season as opposed to the mythic-sized venues they've used in the past. On one hand, I miss the rockstar quality of the larger venues and all the production that goes into them, but on the other hand, I can appreciate the focus on the clothes. So I guess what I'm saying is, I can go either way.
You never know what you're gonna get with G-Star each season. I mean, yes you get their utilitarian aesthetic, signature 'Arc' pant and architecturally-inspired design; the brand is nothing but true to their DNA. However, they are experts at adding unexpected elements into their line that at the conceptual level may seem un-doable, but on the runway is inspiring.
This season I was blown away not only by the silhouettes, but by the heavy mix of textures which were further emphasized by the styling. For example, one of my favorite items, a pair of crocheted shorts made with extra thick yarns, was styled with a slick blazer that drew attention to the textural contrast (I am so hoping those shorts make it to retail). Unexpected elements like molded knee caps were added to slick, coated denim and boiled wool pants. And in true G-Star fashion there are always a few tongue-in-cheek items added just to show you what they can do; the standout this time being a denim life-preserver. Not to be missed was the dandy styling incorporated into menswear, something I would have never guessed would have been possible with this brand, but was pulled off successfully.
