Matt Damon Wears J Brand...Better

 

Matt Damon has been seen in J Brand on more than one occasion but he hasn't exactly wowed us in them, prefering to go for looks that make him look decades older than he is. Even a veteran actor like Jeff Bridges puts it together better.

Recently, Matt went out to dinner with his lovely wife and we have to say, although it still doesn't wow us, it's a marked improvement. The actor wore a pair of J Brand's "Kane" slim straight jean in Boone, with a sweater and his signature beat-up shoes.

We're just ragging on him. We actually love Matt Damon...when he's acting.

CLOSED A/W 2011-2012 Preview

 

When I finished up my limited time at Coterie, I headed to the uber-trendy Ace Hotel to check out German brand CLOSED who had set up shop there for a few days. After having seen several of their lookbooks, and having missed their last visit to New York, I was very eager to finally have a chance to see this brand up close.

The set up in one of the Ace's tony rooms was the perfect backdrop for the brand's offerings which were displayed throughout as if an artsy, trustfund, hipster couple were laying out their threads for a week of hitting the trendiest spots in town. There was a full range of menswear with shirts, sweaters and accessories. However, it's what men wear below the waist that are the conversation pieces in this collection with tuxedo stripes on slacks and pops of color in masculine pinks. A corduroy-like fabric that was developed in-house was used to make bottoms and will be a hit for those who like to find one-of-a-kind characteristics in otherwise straightforward clothing.

For women, tuxedo stripes also made an appearance in pink knee length slacks, coated trousers and jeans. There is no doubt that color in reds and pinks is going to be big for Fall and CLOSED hits the mark in the most eye-catching, berry reds in capris and skinnies. Luxe leathers in cropped shearlings, even a reversible leather vest with the softest curly fur, add a high-fashion element to the overall collection.

Although there was a cohesiveness to it all, with carryover elements in mens and womens, you get the impression that anyone shopping CLOSED will have a hard time deciding what to take home as there is a an understated, but distinct, statement to be made with almost everything.

Mila Kunis in American Eagle

 

Mila Kunis was spotted looking a little camera shy while running errands in Los Angeles. Come on Mila. Ever since you nearly upstaged Natalie Portman in Black Swan we can't get enough of you.

Mila was unsuccessfully incognito in a pair of American Eagle "Jeggings" in Super Dark Destroyed, an oversized college girl hoodie and ballet flats.

Christopher Kane to Partner With J Brand

The uber-popular J Brand has just announced it's latest designer collaboration with award winner Scottish designer Christopher Kane. Kane is no stranger to the brand and has previously collaborated with J Brand on their 5x5 project in support of up and coming British designers.

This time around Kane will join the ranks of greats like Hussein Chalayan and produce a collection using " denim and other fabrications" offered by the company, but that compliment the designer's own business.

When complete, the J Brand/Christopher Kane collection will be available worldwide at retailers that stock both J Brand and Christopher Kane.

Coterie: Hudson Jeans A/W 2011-2012

 

Hudson Jeans' offerings at Coterie are a pretty good snapshot of what's going to be trending for Fall 2011. Flare legs will transition from Spring to Fall of course along with bootcut jeans.

I see red everywhere. Colored denim will really make a splash this particular season and Hudson included reds and dusty pinks in skinnies, crops and cords. I saw a few people, both men and women, wearing red pants during Fashion Week. It's going to be fun to see how this look translates to the masses.

One of my favorite pieces, however, was a pair of denim parachute pants. Never thought I'd use the term 'parachute pants' as an adult. Whatever the name, I am a sucker for new (and wearable) silhouettes and wanted to leave with those jeans on.

 

 

 

 

 

Coterie: Resin Denim A/W 2011-2012

 

Resin Denim is a brand that I've been wanting to meet for a long while. They have pretty much created their whole brand around the coating trend but taken it to a whole new level. On the most extreme end a pair of skinny jeans were coated so heavily they could pass easily for leather, however, unlike leather they had a lot more stretch and were breathable.

Fans of this brand will also like the glossy trouser flares and the coated denim jacket with the lowered back.

 

Coterie: Denimocracy A/W 2011-2012

 

On my way out of Coterie I happened to see the booth with Denimocracy. I was curious about them because I saw so much color on their racks and two, because, well, I'd never heard of them.

This is not a brand for the faint of heart and definitely for those that prefer to stand out, with bright reds and purples among their jeggings. There was a whole range of coated metallic skinny jeans. When I asked why they'd done this, I was told that their market research told them metallics were making a comeback. Can't really argue with that. This is fashion and everything comes back, so in a sense they could be ahead of the game.

For those that were more conservative they had a premium line called Article VIII. Here you'll find more indigo in selvedge denim shirts and of course flares.

 

 

Coterie: Rich & Skinny Jeans A/W 2011-2012

 

Living in New York City has it's advantages, one of them being that many of the brands have showrooms here which keeps me from having to do the hectic tradeshow circuit. However, at the recommendation of our friend Jessie Thorpe over at Denimology, I decided to give Coterie a go. I've been on the other end of tradeshows, and stuck in a booth, so actually browsing them was quite different. You don't get the personal attention you get in a showroom because of the buyers and retailers clamoring for the same attention, but I did get to meet brands that don't have a presence in New York or with whom for some reason or another I've never met.

Rich & Skinny Jeans is one of those brands and was one of my first stops. I perused their racks and pulled out some of my favorite looks from their collection, the majority of which were lightweight trousers, flares and bootcuts. Because they have 'skinny' in their name I thought it only appropriate to pull out at least one skinny jean, so I chose the craziest pair I could find. That "acid-wash" effect looked like it was done with a coating; an interesting effect if this is the case.
