Denim on the Runway: Spring/Summer 2012: Diesel Black Gold
If there was one thing, just one thing, to take away from the Diesel Black Gold presentation it was this: Metallics are back! Yes, folks. Under the direction of Creative Director Sophia Kokosalaki, Diesel Black Gold has found a way to make that once overdone and overused trend covetable again.
As the show started, the first model came out in silver trousers cinched at the ankle which I initially took for shock value, however, as look after look came stomping down the generous runway, I realized Diesel was going somewhere with this.
Metallics could be seen in trousers, jeans, capris, shorts and dresses, in both mens and women's styles and in colors from green to gold to purple. Not only were we seeing the beginning of what could be an explosive trend, but Diesel was also teaching us how to wear it. Tone it down with a denim jacket or blaze it up with metal on metal, that was the message. Shimmery skirts were mixed with gauzy draping and "shiny" jeans were paired with tanks that looked like shattered glass. The mix and match of textures and materials seems to be a signature of Kokosalaki and she does it well.
As for me, season after season after season of studying denim trends, I can almost predict what's coming next. This, however, was unpredictable and my hat goes off to Diesel Black Gold for creating something for me to get excited about again.
