In the Showrooms: Jack Spade Fall 2013 Preview
Yesterday, I was able to preview Jack Spade's Fall 2013 collection. The company, once known exclusively for men's bags, launched a selvage denim line this year and I was curious to see what their full collection looked like. Under the direction of Creative Director/Everyman Cuan Hanley, the Fall collection is small, but very tight and consistent. Nothing is overly dramatic, but there are subtle details in almost all of the offerings which gives the Jack Spade guy a story to tell with every piece he wears.
Wax-coated cottons, long a staple in their messenger bags, could be found in trench coats and blazers. But even more exciting were the flat seams evident in the interior of these items. I love hidden details in clothing and to see a technology normally preserved for sportswear and performance clothing used in basics is very directional for men's fashion. Also, there was a clear theme this season with many items from apparel to accessories inspired by the work of architectural duo, the Eames brothers. The subdued but rich colorways and geometric patterns paid homage to their work. I particularly like how deftly deep coral, rich blues and saturated yellows were used. The average man is becoming more used to the idea of color and Hanley's use of it was bold, but not intimidating.
As we should expect from Jack Spade, accessories were plentiful. Camo is making a comeback and their use of the M90 Swedish camo pattern on bags will extend into the Fall season. There was also a high end line of bags made of Spanish bridle leather. The price points for the two-piece collection were $995 and $1395. Trust me when I say, they look as if they are worth every penny and the heritage design will easily make them collectors items. A first for Jack Spade was a line of watches, some of which were Swiss made. The styles run the gamut from sporty to sophisticated with price points ranging from $98 to $528. A waxwear version stood out to me and is a testament to the brand's determination to incorporate their DNA into all they create.
Overall it was a great, well-rounded collection. As I was looking through the racks I found myself coming up with styling ideas. Once that happens, I know it's a win.
