NSFW: Auckland Law Students Cheekily Parody "Blurred Lines" With Feminist "Defined Lines"
The lyrics to Robin Thicke's summer anthem has been described as every hyphenated adjective that has the word rape in front of it. I'd been singing the song all summer and couldn't understand why those descriptions were being attached to it. Then I decided to read the lyrics. Woah! Then I decided to watch the video. Oh! And Then I decided to watch the NSFW video. OMG! This is what I've been dancing to all summer?! Ignorance is definitely not bliss.
A group of female law students from Auckland University, who are clearly more attentive than I am, decided to create a feminist parody of Blurred Lines, called Defined Lines. The video can be described in one word...Awesome! Not because of the objectifying of men (although that's fun) and not because of how stunning they all are. But because of the brilliant way they battle mysogyny with clever lyrics, actual singing ability and hashtag culture.
In a whopping example of irony or maybe just good old-fashioned double standards, the video was briefly removed from Youtube after being flagged by users for "inappropriate content". Fortunately, the video has been restored. I suggest these amazing law students also create a PG-13 version with accompanying video so younger, more impressionable girls can have a listen as well.
Oh and if you need to watch the original Blurred Lines for reference it's posted below. It was a tough choice of which version to post since YouTube has the unrated version up as well. I guess nipples aren't considered "inappropriate content". Go figure.
