Jeans That Smell Like Fruit are a REAL Thing!
Portuguese retailer Salsa has launched a line of jeans called Fragrance Jeans. I'm going to go out on a limb here and guess that with a name like that, little explanation is needed to explain the pull. As for myself, I can't figure out if this is the next big thing or innovation run amok.
Salsa claims to have created an innovative technology that embeds fruity smelling microcapsules into denim that release a specific scent over time. They don't specify how much time or how many washes it takes before the scent wears off, but they calculate that if you wash your jeans every three days (which I don't) the scent would last almost three months. If you round it out to laundering twice a week over three months, than that's roughly 24 washes.
The jeans only come in one style -a medium-rise, skinny jean, but there are five colors to choose from. Can't say I'm wild about the colors, which are basically super-faded bubblegum hues, but there's a method to the madness. Each color corresponds to a scent, so green is apple scented, orange is orange scented, blue is blueberry scented, etc etc.
Now back to my original conundrum. Could this be the next big thing? Sure. Jeans, especially 100% cotton jeans, can be worn for months without washing (see Levi's CEO Mainstreams What Denimheads Already Knew -Don't Wash Your Jeans). Personally, I live by the sniff test. If my jeans don't stink, then I don't have to wash them. A subtle yet pleasant scent on unwashed jeans would give me even more of an incentive to hold off on putting them in the laundry. Hey, I'm conserving water. Don't judge me.
If I take it a step further, imagine having jeans that have the brand's signature scent. Chanel jeans infused with Chanel no. 9. Or more realistically, Diesel Jeans that smell of any variety of Diesel fragrances. It's kind of cool if you think about it.
On the other hand, throwing them in the wash with a strong detergent and fabric softener and/or spraying them with your favorite scent after would do the trick just as well I imagine.
What do you think? Do you like the idea of wearing scented jeans?
