Shapewear Jeans: 7 Brands That Bring Out Your Best Assets

Shapewear, Jeans, Khloe Kardashian, Waist Training, Jeans, Denim

Have you noticed how obsessed we are with curves nowadays. Between waist trainers, butt lifters, pushup bras and of course, Spanx, it seems we're constantly seeking ways to enhance our figures without going under the knife. Seriously, women haven't been this sucked in and tucked in since the days of the corset!

Jeans have always been known for their body sculpting abilities. That timeless five-pocket construction has given me many a lift and tuck over the years. So what do you get when you combine the body sculpting construction of jeans with the tuck and suck technology of shapewear?

Brands like NYDJ, Marc Allison and DL1961 are just a few who have set out to answer that very question. Each of them incorporate their own version of shapewear technology into the construction of their jeans and a few boast specific claims regarding certain areas of the body.

I tested out a bunch of brands over the course of many months. Even getting my cousin Devina who was visiting from the UK to try a few pairs.. I went out in them, ran errands in them, worked in them, basically, treated them as if they were just another pair of jeans on rotation in my closet.

Over time I noticed that I began favoring some brands while others were slowly forgotten. Devina, on the other hand, favored brands that I didn't. Neither one of us obtained the bodacious bottom and coke can waist of Khloe Kardashian (as if), but overall we were pleased with the results.

Scroll down to find out which brands we think are the most dedicated to bringing out your best assets.

Get The Look: Ciara Goes Machosexual

Talk about blurring gender lines! Ciara donned a men's double-breasted trench coat at the POLO Ralph Lauren presentation during NY Fashion Week in a look that screams normcore gone chic. Bypassing womenswear's take on menswear and going straight to the source is something I don't think we've ever really considered, but Ciara's amazing look truly gives us something to think about.

The singer paired it with head to toe Ralph Lauren mixing denim-on-denim with riding boots and aviators. This is a departure for Ciara who is usually flaunting her fabulous figure with skintight silhouettes and some skin somewhere. Surprisingly, the only thing nude was her flawless makeup.

Scroll down to see how you can get the look as well as some more affordable options.

Denim Scarves for Winter through Spring

Ever since discovering a Denim & Supply Ralph Lauren scarf made entirely of denim while browsing a random mall in Virginia, I've become obsessed with the idea of denim scarves. A few years ago I would have thought the idea was cheesy, but now with denim infiltrating every area of fashion, and not to mention the pounding of snow we got yesterday, a scarf is really the final frontier.

Brands ranging from Louis Vuitton to small boutiques are just a sampling of brands that make denim scarves (or indigo-dyed alternatives) that are so chic and perfect for wrapping around your shoulders during winter winds or a light spring chill.

Flip through the slideshow to see some of my favorites as well as the scarf that started it all...

Talking to Fibre2Fashion About the Future of Denim...

Special Feature on Denim by Fibre2Fashion

A short time ago, Fibre2Fashion, a renown B2B resource for the fashion and textile industry asked me to write an article about the future of the denim industry. I often don't go in depth on the economics of the denim industry here because I enjoy keeping it 'light' so to speak. Therefore when I got a chance to dig deep I jumped at the chance. Unfortunately, the article can only be found in print, but here are some excerpts you might find interesting;

"I am often asked if the skinny jean will ever go away... When posed this question, I often reply with a question of my own that asks the whereabouts of the bootcut jean. I do this to point out that although the bootcut lost its dominance as the default jean for everyday wear, even now there are those consumers who have a preference for it and most established brands still keep the style in stock...I'm not saying everything is in, but when it comes to denim, what's new is new and what's old is heritage."

#InspoSeries Nailing NYDJ Kneepatch Jeans

Need some inspiration on how to wear patchwork jeans? Well look no further.

Artist Kat Weltch kills it in this sporty feminist mashup that pairs NYDJ's kneepatch jeans with dad's cast-off baseball jersey and a pair of kick-ass heels. Who knew you could do so much with this manufactured DIY trend.

Feeling inspired? I am.

Denim is Not Dead

While I perused the booths at MAGIC, Project, Liberty and the countless other fashion tradeshows that were going on in Vegas last week, reports were circulating in the media that jeans are on the decline. As I read through them, I became hyperaware of the myriad of people in some form of denim or the infinite amount of established and up-and-coming denim brands that were showing at almost all of the shows. So what am I to think with so much contradictary information? Well...to put it bluntly, I think denim naysayers are nuts!

If denim was going out of fashion would we have red carpet runway like this...

Juxtapose This! Moto Jackets and Wingtips

I'm not a shoe horse, but I'm not a shoe pony either. While I'm not quick to jump on the latest shoe trends, I do love finding new styles that are only slightly, just a smidge, off the beaten path.

I picked up these wingtip brogues by Born during the cold winter months. After sitting in my closet for way too long, I pulled them out two weeks ago and now I can't stop wearing them! I've noticed that no matter what I wear when I have them on, everyone's eyes go straight to my feet. Whether smiling or frowning at them I can't tell, but either way I'm encouraged. So much so, that I've taken to trying out different ensembles to center a few outfits around them.

So far I've found that the key is to keep it low-key but complementary, like with these NYDJ jeans and moto jacket. The old-school wash of the jean tones down the Cotton Club style of the shoes. Pairing it with an off-white moto and an Alexander Wang crossover adds a little bit of edge.

What do you think? Yay, Nay or Indif?

Best Camo Shoes for Spring 2014

From runway to realway, camouflage is so hot right now. So much so that it has gone beyond jeans and jackets and can now be found in accessories like handbags and footwear.

While I love seeing the utilitarian print interpreted on handbags like the Valentino Rockstud (above), I'm still reluctant to carry one. That reluctance, however, doesn't apply to footwear. From Nike sneakers to Stella McCartney loafers, camo can be found in all manner of styles in all manner of materials and colors.

If you're thinking about trying it out this spring, go for it. To help you out, I've rounded some of my favorite options in each style. Click below for some camo shoe inspo.

Thinking About Camouflage for Spring?

Who A.U, camouflage, jeans, cargo pockets, best jeans for spring 2014

Camouflage is definitely in season. It seems this spring I can't walk outside my apartment without seeing it in coats, pants and even shoes. This time around, however, camouflage is coming in all manner of shapes and colors, not just the traditional green woodland pattern of the past. Therefore, when my friend Erin and I were given the chance to test out a pair of Who.A.U. camouflage cargos in throwback green we couldn't help but have a little fun trying to see if she could, well, camouflage herself. Unfortunately we didn't even have an urban jungle to contend with, so we made do with some office plants.

Adapt and overcome folks. Adapt and overcome.

Check out the rest of the pics of Erin going commando (not the kind) in the office after the jump...
