Denim Shots of the Day

Shedding some light on Spring 2013's youth styling and festivalgoer looks, photographer Denno Dushs captured Judas Mendel in this online "A Hang Out with Judas" editorial. I love the idea of cutoffs next season, as well as some artistic takes on bleaching and tie-dyeing…

AGAVE DENIM x FLAUNT MAGAZINE: The Denim Issue

Agave 1

“I love natural beauty; for this reason I work with simple colors found in nature. When I see denim I see blue of the water and sky. When I see leather (I see) the brown of wood. I love the balance and purity of it all." - Jeff Shafer

Strengthening its voice among denim purists, FLAUNT MAGAZINE invited AGAVE designer and owner Jeff Shafer to be a contributing editor for its much talked about denim issue. Hitting newstands this month, the issue features Shafer’s 4-day Portland-to-LA road trip story, complete with sweeping photography of the journey.

The 10-page editorial details the lifestyle and design inspirations behind the denim brand as Shafer narrates his drive down the West Coast in his “denim blue” Audi R8. Along the way, the designer stops at some of his favorite, most inspirational spots. Pit stops include the Portland Japanese Garden (Shafer uses lots of premium denim from Japan), Cannon Beach, Tillamook Bay, Newport Beach (Oregon), The Redwoods, Trinity River, San Luis Obispo and Santa Ynez.

FLAUNT Magazine: Route 4A South: Where Men Become Boys

FLAUNT magazine is pushing American Mid-West denim-on-denim looks in its "Route 4A South: Where Men Become Boys" editorial, shot by Rachel Bank. Modern waxed denim by Richard Chai and innovative jean silhouettes by Marc Jacobs and AG Armani Jeans complement ruggedly classic dungaree styles by Wrangler, Levi's and True Religion. Accented by leather accessories from Calvin Klein Jeans, Dior Homme and John Varvatos, dark grey denims look right with lightweight washed indigo shirting and heavy-duty jean jackets and shirt-coats.

Anna Faris for FLAUNT MAGAZINE's denim issue

A sun-kissed Anna Faris broadens her celebrity persona in this sexy editorial for FLAUNT MAGAZINE's denim issue. The comedienne actress takes a break from getting laughs, showing off her rocking body. Wearing a Citizens of Humanity jean dress or Levi's denim shorts and Vera Wang  blouse, Faris is the new modern pinup.

HABITUAL: Behind the Scenes

Look at this shot: simple yet effective. Despite the print industry's penchant toward elaborate editorials, special effects and extreme retouching, this amateur, behind-the-scenes snapshot (from the upcoming HABITUAL campaign) might be one of the best illustrations of proper and accurate denim fit.

DSQUARED2 ad campaign FW12

For its FW12 ad campaign, DSQUARED2 pays homage 1960s teen rebellion (and angst), Beatlemania and the growing restlessness and defiance of the new generation. Models as up-to-no-good high-school students look edgy but pulled-together in DSQUARED2's signature dark denims with hand-distressed details.

"Denim Forever" L'Optimum, April 2012

For its April issue, L'Optimum magazine evokes classic European street attitude with its "Denim Forever" editorial. Framed within a context full of  young machismo swagger, key runway pieces by Prada, Paul Smith and Ami merge with denim and lifestyle items from a range of mass-to-luxury, mainstream-to-coveted sources: Dior Homme, Gap, Paul & Joe, etc. Triple-denim looks with lighter, washed-down jean shirts will look right for cool nights next fall. Gritty acid washes and clean white denim offer a sexy summer idea for directional young men.

WONDERLAND MAGAZINE evokes the 1990s

The 90s never looked so good.

Wonderland Magazine takes a 90s pop culture direction for this strikingly well-styled spring editorial. While era-specific grunge trends have been big of late, this spread takes a more playful, urban approach that highlights the colorful (and less angst-ridden) side of the decade… Images of In Living Color, Saved by the Bell and Clueless keep running through my head.

Complemented by some seriously gelled spiky hair, the looks are sophisticated and chic for SS12. I love the double-breast jackets (a little more cropped than traditional styles) and quirky print shirts by PRADA, the baggy pleated pants and the gritty acid-washed jean shirts and denim jackets. In addition to GAP tees and LOUIS VUITTON jeans, other designer pieces are by DSQUARED2, DIESEL and BURBERRY PRORSUM.
