Nasty Gal Lovers Will Love Ruby Starling

Edgy girl online boutiques like Nasty Gal have a huge following and there's no denying that they've had a significant impact on fast fashion styles in the short time they've been in existence. So much so, that brands that once would have been on the fringe are now mainstreaming.

Take Ruby Starling, a relatively new brand based out of LA. Funky, fresh, rock and roll pinup is how I would describe their distinct velvet short shorts and the liberal use of fringe. It's not for everyone, but those into it, will be all over it.

Sneak Peek: THVM's Fall 2013 Lookbook

THVM (pronounced 'them') Fall 2013 women's collection is not groundbreaking, but that's not a bad thing. Standbys and basics, in other words, skinny jeans, are the cornerstone of any wardrobe, expecially when talking about jeans.

Be that as it may, there is still something for those that want a little more than a basic skinny jean. My favorite, and the most daring of the collection is the cropped carrot leg jean (below).  It comes in three washes, and I want all three. Carrot legs are a great cropped style and I personally love the roominess in the hips.

Prps Goods & Co Fall 2013 Lookbook

Grizzly Adams is probably way before your time. You, like myself, have probably heard him referenced over the years but never actually knew, or wondered, who he was and what his significance was to American culture.

Just this week I was enlightened. I got my hands on Prps Goods & Co's Fall 2013 lookbook and the entire woodsy editorial is based on Grizzly Adams, which I've come to learn was a television series from the 1970's. A quick Wikipedia search and I also discovered that the television series was based on a true mountain man from the 1800s who captured and trained bears! Prps is known for being avant garde for denim, but using Grizzly Adams as inspiration is wholly unexpected and quite intriguing.

Flip through the editorial and you will see landscapes and nature scenes in a palette of blues, greens and browns. Hillbilly camouflage is reintrepreted with wildlife prints on jackets created in the vein of old british hunting blazers. Barn jackets, corduroy, tribal prints and oil cloth are mixed in with Prps' signature distressed selvage denim and sportswear.

Theysken's Theory Resort 2014 Lookbook

Shredded details, neoprene-like fabric, clean lines mixed with rough edges, the Theysken's Theory Resort collection is a juxtaposition of texture that with all it's simplicity refuses to let the eye get too comfortable.

Standout pieces are the pleated trouser-like jeans that are made with the most beat up and used denim. Also an A-line dress a'la Twiggy has a shredded decolletage reminiscent of the most ripped and torn jeans.

Overall, it's a small but tight collection and is typical of what we've come to expect from Olivier Theyskens.

What do you think about Theysken's Theory Resort? Sound off in the comments.

D-iD Fall/Winter 2013 Lookbook

Jimmy Taverniti, of the eponymous Taverniti jeans, is back with a new denim line that is living up to his reputation of breaking all the rules.

While other denim brands are taking inspiration from each other, Taverniti is blazing his own trail with his new line D-iD. D-iD is rife with three-dimensional quilting details and grunge effects which are directional in this time of bright colors and busy prints. Fits are on par with this seasons top sellers with the focus being solely on the fabric.

Fashion is nothing but cyclical and while everyone is blinding us with their favorite colors, let it come as no surprise when those who go in the direction of D-iD are seen as the tastemakers pretty soon.

The collection will be available at Bloomingdales and Neiman Marcus as well as other specialty boutiques with a price range of $138 - $228.

Flip through the slideshow to see more of D-iD and let us know what you think.

First Look: Wrangler Noise Collection

Did you know that Mick Jagger, Bob Dylan and John Lennon were all fans of Wrangler during their heydey? I didn't know either. Just another piece of denim history that makes regular history more interesting. I bet you also didn't know that outside of the U.S., Wrangler is not associated with cowboys and rustlers, but is pretty rock and roll (see Wrangler Spring/Summer 2013 Men's and Women's Lookbook). Kinda makes you feel left out huh.

This month Wrangler is launching their exclusive "NOISE" collection. NOISE is a 10-piece capsule collection that references the Rock & Roll era of the Rolling Stones by reworking and reintroducing some of the styles in their archives. Flip through the slideshow and you'll see they captured the essence of the era exactly with denim vests, graphic tees and slim jeans shot in Melbourne's most renown live music venue with the help of Nick Thomm of SRC783 Magazine

The collection is not available in U.S. stores, but Australian eccommerce sites Surfstitch, General Pants and Universal Store will ship to the States and the shipping cost is surprisingly inexpensive. If you ask me, this is what makes it more fun and exclusive for us yanks. So, feel left out no more.

GUESS Women Fall 2013 Lookbook

GUESS Women's Fall 2013 loobook is almost the exact opposite of the Spring 2013 lookbook. Where Spring was all pastels and tribal prints, Fall is definitely on the darker side with no carryover whatsoever, but one...Attitude. No matter whether the GUESS girl is in pink pastels or biker jackets she will always be rock and roll.

Bullet Blues Apparel Spring 2013 Lookbook

There are plenty of new brands that hit the market on a daily basis, but very few with a story such as this one.

Bullet Blues was founded by French native Isabelle Benoit who was inspired by a pivotal visit to the American Cemetery and Memorial in Normandy. Just in case you need a brush-up on your American History (don't worry. I did too), over 73,000 American troops stormed the beaches of Normandy in one of the largest amphibious invasions in world history. This ultimately led to the fall of Hitler and the freedom of Europe from the Nazis. The American Cemetery and Memorial is the final resting place of almost 10,000 of those brave Soldiers. Isabelle, inspired by their sacrifice, returned to the United States wanting to honor these men by launching a denim line.

It may seem strange at first to launch a denim line to honor a Soldier's ultimate sacrifice, however Bullet Blues has a noble and patriotic cause. All manufacturing is done in the United States using only American made materials. The intention is to play a part in helping to keep jobs here and ultimately bolster the economy. And come on, there is nothing more American than a pair of blue jeans.

The line eschews the fancy washes and finishes of larger brands and keeps it simple with flattering fits and color, which is generally what most consumers care about anyway. The price points run upwards of $160 for both men's and women's jeans and they can be purchased on their e-commerce site.

Level 99 Spring/Summer 2013 Lookbook

Level 99s lookbook this season is pretty well-rounded. Instead of having a plethora of styles like the big store brands and hoping half of them resonate with consumers, it seems Level 99 has opted to take the best of Spring's denim must-haves and edit it down. Basically, you're not going to find 5 different versions of tropical prints. Instead you get just one tropical print that works. It's a relatively safe, can't-go-wrong collection of closet-friendly items. That's a good thing. However, there is a gem in the mix in the form of a reversible skinny jean. It's not the typical reversible item with both sides looking like the 'outside'. The reverse actually looks like the inside of a pair of jeans, however, they've taken that side and added a floral print (at least from what I can see in the photo). I think that's a pretty sweet take on the two for one. Especially for someone like me who tends to wear the same pair over and over again. Flip through the lookbook and see for yourself. Are you as excited about this reversible print as I am?
