Levi's Boasts 1 BILLION Liters of Water Saved Since 2011!

Several years ago, Levi's embarked on a mission to reduce the amount of water used to produce a pair of jeans. When the denim industry expanded, critics began to scrutinize the manufacturing process, eventually levying claims that the dyeing and finishing stage was having a significant impact on water conservation. Levi's took a proactive approach and tackled the problem head on with a research and development initiative that aimed to reduce the amount of water used in production. That initiative resulted in the Water<Less collection, a line of denim products manufactured using up to 96% less water in the finishing process. According to Levi's, since 2011, they have saved 1 billion liters of water! That is an amazing figure, especially when considering that many people don't have access to clean drinking water. With that kind of success it's no surprise that they've expanded the initiative beyond manufacturing.

Levi's Creates a Field of Jeans out of the 49ers Football Field

Levis Stadium Field of Jeans
Levi's Stadium - Home of the San Francisco 49ers

Two weeks, 18,850 pairs of jeans and 1 football stadium -those were the components used to create Levi's "Field of Jeans" at the Levi's Stadium in San Francisco.

The project was a joint venture between Levi's and Goodwill in an effort to raise awareness for recycling and keeping used clothing out of landfills. This effort alone kept 12 tons of textiles out of landfills which reduced CO2 emissions by 175,000 pounds. According to Levi's, that's the equivalent of driving roundtrip cross country from NY to San Francisco 36 times. Crazy.

Gap's has launched a new campaign for the holidays called "Make Love". It has the noble and simple purpose of inspiring people to fill the world with love.

“For a few short weeks during the holidays, we become conscious of what matters most to us.” said Seth Farbman, Gap’s Global Chief Marketing Officer. “Make Love is about giving love through action, whether it’s a service to others or a gift that’s a representation of love.”

The campaign features a wide range of influential artists and activist known for using their talents to make a difference in the world. Icons like Cyndi Lauper and Q-Tip join legends Tony Bennett and Harry Belafonte wearing items from Gap's holiday collection in a series of photos that are rich in the simplicity of the gestures; a laugh with a baby, a hug among friends.

Also included are a series of short films featuring Tony Bennett. One particularly awesome one has a group of students performing his classic "The Best is Yet to Come" (below). It's amazing and quite moving to see the students' admiration of Bennett along with their performance of the song. It really is a must-see #love

In addition to the campaign, for 26 days Gap will be offering holiday gift ideas curated by photographers of the VSCO photo editing app. Take a look at it here

Simon Fashion Now at Roosevelt Field Mall

If you grew up outside of Manhattan, which is like 75% of us, than you used to shop at the mall. If you live in the suburbs than you definitely shop at the mall. If you live in a rural area than the mall is probably your weekend getaway. I am a Jersey native so I was for sure a mall rat if there ever was one (Thank you Kevin Smith for giving us a name). And if you were in the mall, you saw the signs for Simon, even if, like me, you didn't know who Simon was.

Recycle Your Old Jeans To Win A Celebrity's Jeans With "THE GREAT DENIM CHALLENGE"

Recycle-1

There must be something in the air I swear. Last week, I talked with G-Star RAW Global Brand Director Shubhankar Ray extensively about sustainability in denim and how the brand is using recycled denim in many of their best sellers (see Catching Up With G-Star RAW's Global Brand Director Shubhankar Ray). I commented that I hope other brands continue to be socially responsible and look here...

Cotton Incorporated (DenimHunt parent company) has been facilitating a recycled denim initiative for years where used denim is collected and recycled into insulation for Habitat for Humanity. Now with a new name, Blue Jeans Go Green, and in it's 7th year, Cotton has just announced that it aims to collect their one millionth pair of jeans (wowza!) with "The Great Denim Challenge".

"The Great Denim Challenge" is a celebrity auction where denim is the currency. Fourteen celebrities, including Hayden Panettiere, Heidi Klum, Adriana Lima, Britney Spears, Ryan Phillippe, and Darren Criss have each contributed a pair of jeans that are autographed and paired with a thank you note. To get a pair of their jeans all you have to do is commit the highest number of your own jeans for recycle. So for example, if someone bids 8 pairs of their old jeans on Britney Spears' jeans, but you bid 12 pairs of your own...you win! It's that simple. And come on...you're not even bidding money! Just jeans you were never going to wear anymore anyway. This is the best celebrity auction ever! And it's for a good cause. The air is really sweet up there.

The auction kicks off today at www.BlueJeansGoGreen.org and ends on November 3rd. Start emptying out those drawers.

LEVI'S Conservation Conversation

Levi's waterless 1Water conservation is a hot topic in denim manufacturing and LEVI'S is spearheading conversation and more importantly taking action. In addition to setting the manufacturing benchmark for future use of water in dyeing and finishing, the denim label is actively dedicated to bringing clean water to those who need it most.

Levi's waterless 2

Last Wednesday, LEVI'S hosted a dinner in support of the LEVI'S Water<Less initiative. Actors Joe Manganiello and Adrian Grenier were among those in attendance. Befittingly, famed LA chef Mark Peel cooked a waterless dinner.

LEVI'S Water<Less jeans reduce water use (up to 96%) in the finishing stage. In comparison, the average pair of jeans uses 42 liters of water. LEVI'S continues to expand with its new collection for SS12. The brand has already made over 13 million Water<Less products, saving more than 172 million liters of water.

Apolis, Spring/Summer 2012

Apolis SS12 1

In addition to its successful corporate responsibility and global sustainability initiatives, Apolis delivers fresh and exciting collections each season. With heightened focus on fabric hand and color, the label offers a unique style philosophy.

Here are my favorite looks of SS12; I love that the website breaks down the ensembles, highlighting the individual pieces. From the Standard Issue Selvedge Denim and waxed cotton USMC Jacket to the Filson + Apolis Philantropist Briefcase, my wallet may be in trouble.
