Earlier this year Ann-Sophie Back became creative director at Cheap Monday and now we get to see the results of that pairing in Cheap Mondays Spring/Summer 2010 collection. Although not directly responsible for denim, she does have the role of creating a stronger identity for the brand. From her namesake collection, we already knew that Back likes to destroy denim, so it was no surprise to see jeans that were hanging on by a thread. What interested us the most was the layering upon layering of denim 80's hobo style and it just gets more interesting as the eye goes down. Notice the denim 'leg warmers' in all their frayed and bleached out glory, but it doesn't end there. Drop the eyes even lower and we have denim gladiators that manage to be just as frayed and destroyed as the denim above. We declare, Success!

Doug Black has found himself in a tight squeeze more times than he cares to remember. One day, he got caught in the rain without an umbrella and was unable to run. When his colleagues sat in a circle, the 23-year-old English teacher from Portland, Ore., couldn't cross his legs. And when he tried to jaywalk, while in Beijing for work, he couldn't hop the median divider with his friends.
"I had to walk half a mile down the street on my own to use the crosswalk," he says.
His jeans were too tight. But he has no plans to buy a looser style. "Discomfort comes with the territory," he says.
Skinny jeans, with tapered legs and narrow-peg ankles, seemed like a flash in the pan when they appeared in stores a few years ago. They seemed more suited to women. Today, though, sales of men's skinny jeans are going strong, and mass brands Gap and Levi's are getting in on the action.
Explanations abound for why men would want to wear jeans that look so uncomfortable and impractical. Some fashion observers say skinny jeans' tight hold on certain men stems in part from the wearers' desire to show off their gym-sculpted bodies. Then, too, denim brands, retailers and men's fashion magazines have relentlessly promoted skinny jeans. And pop stars like Justin Timberlake and Kanye West, by wearing skinny jeans, have given something resembling permission for style-conscious young men to wear them.
But men are discovering, as women have long known, that the style can be unforgiving. One sometimes must diet and wiggle, tug and stretch to squeeze into a pair of tight jeans.
The Vans Warped Tour is coming to the Comcast Theatre in Hartford, Connecticut and there are plenty of bands lined up to entertain. One of the few designers eschewing trending silhouettes, finishes and styling, Rick Owens went off in an unknown direction. His collection was considered an apology for his acute criticism of the fashion sense of the American tourist although we're trying to see how putting men in angular silhouettes and skirts is an apology for the fanny pack. We're also trying to figure out why anyone would want to apologize for that.
Not much of the denim shown in the presentation would be considered wearable, however, we're always happy to see things done with the fabric that are purely inspirational.
There were few denim or denim-inspired looks coming down the runway at the Kenzo show, however, what was shown was memorable. A denim blazer with an almost indescribable finish reminded us of a painting. Even up close it looked as if it were haphazardly sketched with oil and chalk pastels. Also, shown were reverse tie-dye finishes seen in coats and pants.

Among other collaborations seen in his highly wearable Spring/Summer 2010 presentation, Junya Watanabe also treated us to the offerings in his partnership with Levi's. Whether skinny or wide, raw or abraded, torn or intact, cuffs were rolled high revealing plenty of ankle and at times displaying a lining underneath. The denim blended in well with Watanabe's dapper, snob of an English gentleman.
