Style of the Day: Hudson Jeans "Beth Baby Boot" Bootcut Jeans

(Hudson Jeans "Beth Baby Boot" in Brigg)

I said it before and I'll say it again, the bootcut is back. Last season we saw a bootcut silhouette slipped quietly and discreetly into many a collection, hiding among the plethora of skinny jeans and jeggings. Only a handful of brands have been openly declaring its return and the latest is Hudson Jeans.

Hudson recently launched the "Beth Baby Boot" jean which is a super-slim bootcut of the kind I used to like to wear at the height of their popularity. A low-rise and a subtle flare adds height and lengthens the legs while the inky indigo wash is abraded in all the right places that make bootcut jeans so flattering to the body.

The jeans retail for $198 and can be purchased on the newly launched e-tail section at www.hudsonjeans.com.

Style of the Day: Skinny Cargoes

Denim cargo pants are pretty much one of the hottest things to happen to a pair of women's jeans this year since the addition of spandex. Add that to the fact that the military trend that fashion editors like to say is new every season is once again new, it seems only fitting to slap on some cargo pockets on a pair of skinnies to get a bonafied hit.

J Brand was one of the first companies to have the foresight to take advantage of this trend. There was a time when I couldn't go a week without talking about some celebrity who was wearing their Houlihan cargoes. I hope the designer who thought it up got a nice bonus for that one. Now other brands like AG Jeans, Chip + Pepper and most recently Black Orchid have come up with their own versions of the skinny cargo. Variety is the spice of life, or something like that, and it's going to be great to see how this trend will evolve with all of these brands putting their own spin on it.

The jeans featured are Black Orchid's "Black Rider" cargo jeggings in Equinox, Midnight and Eclipse. The jeggings retail for $150 and can be found at www.blacklabelboutique.com.

Style of the Day: The Bootcut Jean

J Brand "Lexington" in Pure at www.DonnaIda.com

So the bootcut is making a bonafied comeback after being relegated to knockaround status for the past, say, four years. Nary a bootcut has been seen in fashionable circles since then, having been completely dominated by the leg-lengthening, boot-friendly, shoe-flaunting skinny jean. But could this be considered a true comeback?

The fashion industry in and of itself loves a good comeback, but what I want to know is, why is this one happening so soon? There was a time when the cycle of a trend was a lot longer. Think of how long it took for bell-bottoms to make their way back into our wardrobes. The 80's is super popular right now, but I remember about ten years ago thinking that there was no way that those neon looks, voluminous outfits and sci-fi accessories would ever be seen again except in movies like Pretty in Pink or Revenge of the Nerds. But now look at us. Given enough time, and some reinterpretation, we are quick to embrace those long ago looks once again. But I digress.

I still have bootcut jeans in my dresser drawers, most of which I wear on long flights because they are my most broken in pairs, but I'd never thought that jeans I still wore would be considered eligible for a comeback, unchanged and unedited. My prediction; they won't knock the most popular styles off of their pedestal, but will be another choice in an industry that is currently overflowing with options.

Style of the Day: Level 99 Boyfriend Shorts

Picture 3

Boyfriend jeans haven't exactly taken over our wardrobes, but they have become a wardrobe staple and a nice alternative to those skin tight jeans we women, and some men, usually prefer. Even though we don't wear them often, there's something to be said for a style that has kicked off it's own voluminous offshoots such as the boyfriend blazer and now boyfriend shorts.

Boyfriend shorts are great for the summer because they're comfortable and roomy.  But I'm biased. I personally loathe skin tight shorts. You know. Those shorts that squeeze the life out of a person. Yeah. Those aren't attractive on anyone. However, considering the summer we're having, jeans aren't always an option and boyfriend shorts are the perfect alternative other than skirts and dresses. They also transition seamlessly into Fall with tights and leggings.

Level 99 has a great pair of boyfriend shorts that are very affordable at $62. You can find them at www.revolveclothing.com.

Style of the Day: Level 99 Cinched Cargos

Cargos are gearing up to becoming the next big thing in womenswear thanks to J Brand who launched the Houlihan skinny cargo pant this year. It would be easier and faster to name the celebrities that haven't been spotted in them then those that have. Although it may seem like J Brand has the market locked up tight, there are other brands and styles to choose from.

Level 99's "Cinched Cargo" is a loose-fitting trouser with ties at the ankle and light enough for Spring and Summer. For those that don't want to follow the leader, but would like to stay somewhat on trend, these pants are a great alternative to the skinny cargo. At $88 they are a more economical alternative as well.

You can find them at www.anthropologie.com

Style of the Day: Hudson Jeans' Harem Cargo Pants

Hudson Jeans recently launched a military-inspired capsule collection called Subversion Collection and one of the standout pieces is the Harem Cargo Pants. The pants have an exposed button-fly, distressed patchwork and cargo pockets that hit at the knee. The capri-length jeans are another style that is sure to bring attention to your shoes while the overall volume is eyecatching in and of itself.

The Harem Cargo Pants retail for $325 and can be found at Barney's NY, Barney's LA and Jeffrey.

Style of the Day: J Brand Cropped Flair

J Brand has just introduced a new style called Gigi. The jean is a mid-rise, cropped, kick-flare that takes inspiration directly from the Fall 2010 runways. This ankle baring style is guaranteed to draw attention to the feet and should be fun for shoe mavens.

The jeans retail between $158 and $196 and can be purchased at Tobi, Singer22, Revolve Clothing and jbrandjeans.com

Ralph Lauren Princeton Chambray Sport Coat

With denim-on-denim trending it seems natural that chambray would get a boost as well. During Market Week I saw several chambray shirts for women from companies like MiH Jeans and Rag & Bone that were far removed from the staid button-downs I usually associate with the fabric. Now Ralph Lauren has come out with a fabulous item for men by using the classic fabric to create a sport coat. The sport coat has a slim cut and has been washed down to create a slightly aged look. The result is a suprisingly dapper Spring/Summer item for men. The coat can be found in stores or at RalphLauren.com and retails for $375. I'm looking forward to seeing if designers continue to take the use of chambray to the next level. I guess we'll have to wait and see.

Denim Trends at the J.Crew Mens Shop

The fashionable set abounded at an event held at the J.Crew Men's Shop in SoHo as most attendees and staff were in their trendiest denim.

For men, cuffs were prominent as the guys took their cue from women's fashion by showing off a little bit of ankle as seen here on Tremaine Romeo, J.Crew Visual Director. The look was jazzed up with euro-hip suspenders or ripped to shreds in the boyfriend's version of the boyfriend jeans.

Bastille Day in Brooklyn

Revelers came out in full force for Brooklyn's own Bastille Day celebration on Smith Street. The event started at 12p and ended at 10p with event-goers enjoying a festival that celebrated the French equivalent of the 4th of July. For several blocks, Smith Street was miraculously transformed into a sandbox with multiple petanque courts set up for a tournament that included over 80 participants. On a small section that wasn't covered with sand, a skateboarding competition was held featuring some high-flying, fearless teenagers. Overall, it was a day filled with great music, great food and great denim-trends.

Ripped/torn jeans and cuffing was to be expected but was made extra edgy in extreme widths. Knee length cutoffs were prevalent on men and women as well as denim onesies and dresses. Suspenders added a uniquely euro-flavor and colored denim made an appearance.
