Inside GUESS Spring 2015

GUESS's Spring 2015 collection on display in their NYC showroom

 

GUESS has gone for clear themes this year when presenting their collections and to great effect. This season's theme was inspired by traditional Japan and was in stark contrast to last season's boho city cowgirl theme where saddles, lassos and cowboy boots (see In the Showrooms: GUESS Fall 2014) provided the mood. 

The pink parasols, cherry blossoms and pale but vivid candy-colored props that were sprinkled throughout the showroom created a sense of serenity that drew attention to the return of floral prints on shoes and jeans. It also softened GUESS's edgier offerings like boilersuits and frayed denim vests and skirts.

The "denim" bikini with hotpants will be a festival favorite and the brightly colored crossbody bags will be a hit when the weather gets warmer.

Spring Dreaming With Marciano

Marciano's lookbook is so spring I can't stand it! In a good way just in case the sarcasm is lost in the reading. Instead of having you look around for my favorites I just collaged them (above). I'm all about the floral on floral (I'm coining that term) suit and the cropped length of the trouser allows a sliver of skin to break up the medley. The all white and tangerine color suits are must-have/wish list/closet-stuffer items as well. 

The lookbook is full of brights and pastels, but Marciano makes sure to include their signature edge with plenty of LBDs to add to your collection.

Picking My Favorites From the GUESS Spring 2014 Lookbook

Here it is! We saw it in the showroom (see Fun With GUESS & Marciano) and now we get to see the GUESS woman styled to perfection in the spring 2014 lookbook. This time around I have a whole list of favorites and with the look numbers on the images it should be easy to find them.

My top pick is the skinny jumper (Look 10). So many brands default to a boyfriend style so it's nice to see it go slim and sexy. The cuffs, however, keep it down to earth. My number two pick is the denim moto vest (Look 15). It's another slim item that is usually oversized and for me is perfect for shorts. I can't quite visualize wearing it with jeans yet, but if the style takes off, who knows. The slick black sport shorts are my third (Look 19). No reason for it. I just like them. 

Unfortunately one of my favorite looks from the showroom isn't in the lookbook like the lumberjack check skinnies, although they are available in the shorts style (Look 6). Bummer. I was looking forward to seeing this one styled.

GUESS’ New Global Campaign, Bollywood Actress Priyanka Chopra and Diversity in Fashion

GUESS has worked with some of the most iconic names in fashion and pop culture with past campaigns launching the careers of Claudia Schiffer and Anna Nicole Smith.  

In an interesting and quite strategic move I might say, GUESS has chosen Bollywood actress Priyanka Chopra to be the face of the Holiday 2013 global advertising campaign. I didn't know much about Priyanka before, but Wikipedia fixed all that. Apparently, she's a big deal. Priyanka is one of the most popular celebrities in India and one of the highest paid actresses in Bollywood. She is also a former Miss World, a writer and a philanthropist. Being chosen to be a global brand ambassader for a company with a reach as large as GUESS could expand her popularity across the globe and could have positive results not just for her or the brand, but for the fashion industry as well.

Fun With GUESS & Marciano

Expect more fun with color from GUESS and Marciano for spring 2014. Color permeated the showroom and was best expressed in this multicolor display of jumper shorts (above). Several years ago, I would have looked at this collection and thought it belonged in the tweens section, or that I was far too, *cough*, mature to pull it off, but color is so important now that I can no longer make those kind of assumptions.

The fun stuff wasn’t just limited to color however. GUESS and Marciano showed their playful side in denim with lumberjack checks, bejeweled pockets, patches and distressing on women’s jeans. It reminded me of the ’80’s and 90’s when we used to customize our jeans with paint,  patches and charms. Now I can’t help but look forward to the possible return of those days. 

GUESS guys were a little more subdued than the women. Instead of bright color, unique coatings were used instead to add interest to men’s jeans. As for the rest of the collection, this guy still goes for edge over play.
